As mentioned in another response to your post, the Arkansas regiment was then serving in the home area of the man in question. In the more common pattern of enlistment, men joined companies recruited near home. It's less often reported, but sometimes men at home developed an attachment or interest in soldiers who happened to be camped near home. Sometimes they elected to join based on friendship or admiration or both.

This is not odd in the least.
