Hello David, Of course it would depend upon the time frame and possible rank of the soldier and what the soldier died of ie contagious disease etc. Abbeville had some considerable damage done to its town during the Vicksburg campaign. Some of the Union soldiers would have been reinterred and taken to Corinth National Cemetery after the War. Part of your answer may be with the pension records of Corporal Noah Van Buren Ness of the Kansas 7th Cavalry. If my memory is correct mention was made by this soldiers sergeant at the time of his death in August of 1864. I think he made note of a small local cemetery in Abbyville (Abbeville) that had a few Confederate soldiers buried within its grounds. Ness died of his wound after a few days and the decision was made to bury him at the local house where he died. It was believed that he was taken to the National Cemetery at Corinth,MS and buried as an unknown soldier after the War. I've been to Abbeville a couple of times as it's not too far from Oxford,MS but I did not inquire as to if the local cemetery at the time of the War was still there. Amoung the Union soldiers that day when Ness was shot was a young private named William Cody, who would turn out to be Buffalo Bill, he too was with the 7th Kansas Cavalry. I think that General Forrest was on his way to Memphis,TN at the time when this small skirmish occured and Forrest had left behind a small force near Abbeville to contend with the Union troops there. I believe this affair may have been known as the skirmish of Hurricane Creek.

Abbeville may have had serveral Confederate camps or temporary places where they stayed. About thirty years ago while metal detecting a few miles from Abbeville I found a few Confederate buttons and parts of spurs. I've always wanted to go back but never have had the time.
