Evidently Sleeth did not hold a commission in the Confederate army. He did not command one of Roddey's companies, but as a friend of Roddey had an informal position as chief of scouts in 1864-65. Looks as if Joseph Ballew belonged to the "Leighton Rangers," which entered Confederate service in the Spring of 1864.
