I have no explanation for how his enlistment information was listed. But, here's my take:

Captain T. T. Howze's Company E, Shubuta Guards, was mustered into service March 8, 1862 at Shabuta, Miss. by [Colonel] Robert McLain, Mustering Officer [Col. McLain commanded the regiment]

Company E was organized at Shubuta, Miss. on 1st of March 1862 and mustered in by [Colonel] R. McLain 8th March 1862. Left Shubuta 7 April 1862 and arrived at Columbus, Miss 8 April 1862 and were there through June 30.

Raston L. Avera, Private, Company E, 37th Mississippi Infantry, enlisted May 8, 1862 at Columbus, Miss. The regiment was located at Columbus at this time.

In a later muster roll, Avera is listed as enlisting March 8 at Shubuta by Colonel McLain, however, he was not paid on the March & April muster.
Thus I take this earlier muster-in date to be in error and that of enlisting May 8 at Columbus by his Captain Howze to be the correct data.

The information found on these cards were transcribed from the original company muster rolls by War Department clerks ca 1900. Two different clerks may have transcribed this data using different criteria.

Hope this makes sense.
