Alan - I don't believe that being a physician and being a foot soldier were mutually exclusive. I have a ggg uncle who finished at the University of Nashville Medical Department in 1857, who also served as a private in Co. G, 17th Mississippi Infantry. It seems that his patriotism for his country overrode his dedication to his patients.
