Re: University Greys Talk Sept. 26 Oxford
Bill, I have very extensive records on the University of Mississippi students before the war, John F. Brown was not a student there. He probably showed as a student in the 1860 census and that probably meant he was a student in what we would call High School, or he was possibly a student at College Hill, college, about 5 miles north of Oxford. It was started and run by the Presbyterians up there and had 1 professor and 50 students in 1860. A Freshman at the U of M had to be 16 years old, but they would allow 15 year old kids in if they met all the requirements and the president allowed it. I know of one 15 year old freshman there in 1860/61.
I have seen the great picture of John F. Brown and I know a bit about him, he was mayor of Oxford and I know a descendant of his, Billy Ross Brown. He was also very active in the Lamar Rifles Survivor Association. He should be pictured, later in life, in the front of the Lamar Rifles book, in that group picture. I may also have a smaller group picture, with him in it, taken in 1899. Would you or someone you know like me to dig into my files on J.F. Brown for you?
