I'm sorry I missed your earlier post. This is very interesting. I am familiar with the Confederate use of Pioneer Corps. Stonewall Jackson's Pinoneer Corps were free Blacks, with White Engineering officers. They would be compariable to combat engineers. I have references to Jackson's Pioneer Corps operating under fire while building bridges during the Valley Campaign.
