Re: CPT Martin's Independent Company

Thanks George! I found a good description of the service of William T. Martin who was "Captain Martin" of the independent Mississippi cavalry company sent to Virginia at the beginning of the war. Apparently this company was aka the Natchez Cavalry, Natchez Mounted Company, and the Adams Troop. The Jeff Davis Legion was a battalion sized unit expanded to regimental size and Martin was promoted through the field grades to full colonel under Wade Hampton in Stuart's Cavalry Corps. They were engaged in the Gettysburg campaign.

I am still looking for information on Private William P. HUGHES who was a member of this company, at least according to the two records filed in the 1st Virginia Cavalry CMSR. The first record in his file is a Federal POW record at Fort Delaware showing that William HUGHES "gave up" at Gettysburg on 6 JUL 1863 and was sent to Fort Delaware. His name appears on the 30 AUG 1863 list of those POWs at Fort Delaware "desirous of entering the service of the U. S.". This record states that he claimed to have been a conscript born in England. A second record shows that William P. HUGHES arrived at Fort Delaware on 2 MAR 1864 from Camp Chase. We have an additional record obtained from NARA Tape 45 showing that William P. HUGHES of the 1st Virginia Cavalry was captured at Gettysburg 6 JUL 1863 and was housed in Division 18 of the POW barracks on Pea Patch Island. He was listed one who "wished to join the U. S. Army" in a published regimental history of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. Still a confused mess!
