How do you smear a man who ordered the burning of Oxford, the University of Mississippi and Ripley for no military advantage? Kind of like "smearing" Al Capone to me. The University was not burned because the two Captains sent to burn it, "refused to carry out such a vandal order". It is said some of the troops who burned Oxford were " made mad with wiskey" for the occasion. Perhaps this has something to do with his nick name. I must admit, I have a good deal of ill feelings toward Smith due to what I have read of him, and what I have read of the Mississippians who lost homes, posessions and businesses, due to his orders.

I will search what I have on Smith for you, for his nick name. May I ask your interest in him?
