According to the O.R., Wirt Adams arrived late in the battle and served rear guard duty for Gregg's retreat.

"After checking a column of the enemy yesterday [May 12], for four miles at Dillon's, I marched by General Gregg's order to Raymond and fell in his rear. In withdrawing, marched from Mississippi Springs this morning at 3 a.m. ..."

This would have included the 350 men from Wirt Adams' Cavalry and 450 men from the 20th Mississippi Mounted Infantry.

The regimental history of the 20th Mississippi Mounted Infantry mentions this, without providing any detail.
