Re: 10th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry

Chris --

The regiment had not been returned from the Carolinas, although substantial numbers could be found in camp in Alabama. During the last year or two of the war, finding new mounts became difficult for Confederate cavalrymen. A cavalrymen without a horse wasn't much use to his command. For that reason Confederate leaders began establishing camps for dismounted cavalrymen. Some troopers had gone home in search of a new horse and never returned. Officers and men from cavalry commands sent to dismounted camp could be reassembled, remounted and returned to service in larger bodies.

A dismounted camp for men belonging to Ferguson's cavalry brigade had been established at Carthage AL (present-day Moundville in Tuscaloosa County). When the final campaign began in late March 1865, many of the men in this camp had secured new mounts and available for service. General Forrest pressed them into his command, which fought Wilson's cavalry raid from Montevallo to Selma.

Meanwhile the main body of Ferguson's cavalry brigade was stationed in east central Georgia. In early April Ferguson was ordered to bring his command to Charlotte NC, which he did by April 10th. At this point Ferguson's officers and men became one of four cavalry brigade which escorted President Davis and what remained of the Confederate government from that point to the Savannah River.

The company transfer you mentioned involved two regiments assigned to the same brigade. Ferguson's brigade disbanded at Forsyth GA, no paroles being on record for men who went home from that point. If the soldier in question has a parole based on the surrender agreement made at Citronelle AL, we can feel certain that he was with Forrest during the final stages of the war. Otherwise, we really don't know.
