In Response To: George Bird - Carroll Rifles ()

Edwin,

Sheriff George W. Bird's age is noted as 23 and also 25 when he enlisted at Carrollton in 1861 as a Private. He rose thru the ranks and was serving as Captain of Company K, 11th. Miss. Infantry when he was KIA at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.

According to the information from the following site, Captain Bird was killed at the stone fence while cheering on his men in the famous charge up the slope of Cemetery Ridge.

If you are interested the 46 pages in his military service file can be ordered from this site.

The following web sites have some data for the other men who served in Company K.
