The battalion, or its companies, were active in Northern Mississippi throughout 1862. In a July 12, 1862 report, Frank Armstrong reported he had, among other units, McCulloch’s Battalion, Barteau’s 2nd Tennessee Battalion, Hill’s Company, and Sander’s Company. These units were with him in his July raid into Northern Alabama. Hill's company was also with Armstrong in August, when he combined with Red Jackson's cavalry and raided West Tennessee. At least Hill's Company was at Iuka. Armstrong's other units there included Adam's Miss Regiment, the 4th Miss, the 1st Miss Partisan Rangers, the 2nd Missouri, and the 2nd Arkansas. The battalion was at Corinth. Post-Holly Springs, the battalion is specifically listed in Van Dorn’s cavalry in a January 1863 report
Hill College, in Texas, has a Civil War research department, and their capsule history of the 17th Tennessee Battalion states the battalion was in the Holly Springs raid. McCulloch’s Brigade seems to have many of the units of Armstrong’s Brigade in the August-October actions. As the battalion was reported as active with these units through October 1862, and is reported with Van Dorn's cavalry in January 1863, it is possible it was involved in the December 1862 raid.
