I find it interesting that nobody has really spent much ink on the fact that Halleck and Lincoln had already terminated Grant's overland campaign for Vicksburg ("go no farther"). The irony of Van Dorn's and Forrest's 1862 raids is that they actually expedited the arrangement that would finally doom Vicksburg: Grant moving with McPherson's men to join Sherman and McClernand at Milliken's Bend.
