Samuel Appleton Storrow was the uncle of Thomas Wentworth Higginson: author, historian, cleric, mentor of Emily Dickinson, early women's rights advocate, abolitionist*, Colonel in the Union Army, led freed black slaves into combat on the Sea Islands of South Carolina.

*Higginson was one of the "Secret Six" - New England abolitionists who provided the funding for John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry.

S. A. Storrow's home, "Farley," was located on the corner of the Brandy Station battlefield (Virginia), and served as headquarters of the 5th Corps, Union Army, Major General John Sedgewick commanding. Some months after the corps moved on, Sedgewick was killed by a Confederate sharpshooter at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 9, 1864
