Re: Question on MS 8th Cav. and MS 28 Cav?

My ancestor, Private A.(nderson Sinclair was on muster of MS 8th Cavalry, Co.A, thru Oct. 1864; but the next muster I have shows him on

"Roll of Prisoners of War listed under 28th Cav. Co. H, commanded by Col. J.T. McBee, surrendered at Citronelle, AL by Lieut. Gen R. Taylor, C.S.A, to Maj. Gen. E.R.S. Canby. USA, May 4, 1865, and paroled at Gainesville, Ala., May 12, 1865." There's a 'gap' from Oct. 1864 to May 1865??

There is no gap. October 31, 1864 is the date of the last muster rolls for the company and regiment which survived to be gathered into the Compiled Service Records. The next card in his file is that of a Yankee list of "POWs".

I would assume that your man and his comrades were stragglers and somehow joined up and surrendered along with the men of the 28th.

George Martin

The last surviving document in their files show them stationed in the field January 1865

Regiment

Stationed in the field, January 1, 1865.

September 10, 1863.— Note: this command was first organized
at Pikeville, Mississippi as a battalion and known as the Nine-
teenth Mississippi Battalion Cavalry, and then reported to
Brigadier-General Chalmers at Oxford, Mississippi, then com-
manding the cavalry in north Mississippi and was by him assigned
to Colonel R. [M.] McCulloch's Brigade.

February 15, 1864.— The command was organized as a regiment
having been increased to ten companies by the addition of four
companies and was then known and nominated as the Eighth
Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry.

This command has been serving with Colonel McCulloch's
Brigade except when temporarily attached to Colonel [Jeffrey] E.
Forrest's Brigade in February 1864 and to Colonel Rucker's
Brigade in June and July 1864.

Respectfully submitted,

J. S. CAROTHERS,

Adjutant.

Respectfully forwarded,

C. W. JOHNSTON,

Captain,

Commanding, Pro Tem.

Over the period February 1865 to May 1865, they were attached to Starke's Brigade, Chalmers' Division, Forrest's Cavalry Corps.
