Capt. Sylvanus J. Quinn of 13th Mississippi
An interesting biography of Sylvanus J. Quinn appears in Confederate Military History, Extended Addition, vol. IV (Virginia), pp. 1129-1130. Quinn was born near Perry, Houston county, Georgia on 8 March 1837. When the war broke out he was the proprietor of a newspaper, the "Bulletin," in Louisville, Mississippi. He served with Company A "Winston Guards" of the 13th Mississippi, and held the rank of Captain at the battle of Gettysburg. At the Wilderness, he received a painful bruise over his heart from a bullet that had lost momentum upon striking a small dictionary in his pocket. He kept the bullet as a memento. Quinn was captured at Sailor's Creek. Mention is made of a relation, I think it was Quinn's father, who was with General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 and fought at the battle of New Orleans.
