Death of Col. Moses W. Smith

In "Shelby and His Men" J.N. Edwards recounts the death of the 6th Mo Cavalry commander at the 2nd battle of Newtonia, Oct. 28, 1864. Col. Moses W. Smith was a Major in this outfit for a long time and assumed command of the regiment, if I'm not mistaken, after G.W. Thompson took over command of Shelby's Brigade. I haven't been able to find his death mentioned in any reports or official records, which is odd since he was a regimental commander. I know there are errors in Edwards' book, so I like to corroborate his information with official sources. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks,

Michael
