James Edward Barton

I just recently found my gr. gr. gr. grandfather's grave, he is buried next to my gr. gr. grandmother in Webb Cemetery in Black, Missouri. His name is James Edward Barton and his gravestone reads, "Killed by Bushwackers", this was obviously place sometime after his death, not likely an original gravestone. He was married to my gr. gr. gr. grandmother, Virginia Jane Shields and their daughter, my gr. gr. grandmother's name was Elizabeth (Barton) Johnson who married Merideth William Johnson. James was killed in 1865. I am wondering if anyone might know the circumstances of his death. Thanks!
