Wounded in both thighs is a polite term for a wound to the Private parts as I’ve seen in previous reports. His file includes these two comments:

“simple flesh wound of both thighs ?sev”

“severely wounded at the battle of Franklin, Nov. 30, 1864”

Severe, indeed!!
