Capt. Goah Stewart Letter from Franklin, TN

Dec. 27th, 1864.
[Franklin, Tennessee]

Dear Sister Sallie,

I have not as yet received an answer to my letter that I had written to Dr. Case. I fear he has not received it. I will now hastily write you, And let you know of my whereabouts. And that I am doing well and improving fast.

I was wounded on the 30th of Nov. in the fight at this place. I am at Dr. Waldridge's. Also Lieut. Foote(?), who is badly wounded in the right side. I have no language to express the thankfulness I feel for the ______ kindness we have received from the young ladies and Dr.Waldridge and wife. They [have] taken us from the hospital and given us a nice room in his house. They are moving the wounded to Nashville. We will be removed as soon as we are able to Nashville. And from there to prison.

Today, one year ago, I was with you Dear Sister, time brings changes, today I am in Franklin Tenn., wounded and a prisoner. I lost 4 men killed and 6 wounded in my Company in the fight at this place. Newton and Thomas(?) was wounded, they are getting well. Col. Garland and Capt. Woodward was killed.

Has Wm. T. been in Missouri? let me know. I [have] written several letters by ____ , he left us at Tuscumbia, Ala. You and Dick must write soon. Give me all the news, for I am very anxious to know [what] you are doing.

I have no news from Thomas Phillips. Forrest’s Cavalry was with us in this fight but I could not find out whence T. was. Has Sister Kate returned home from school? Will she go back? I would request that she go to school as long as possible. Tell her to write to me. What is Slick doing? How is James and his young wife? And have you any news of John Jacobs? The last news from him, he was in Ark. What is Steven Ross doing?

What young girls have married since I left. For I am interested and expect to find a wife in South East Mo., some future day. I have a Sweetheart in Ala. and one now I've been writing a young lady in this place. So you see my heart is gone and to tell you the truth, I cannot tell whence my old heart is . Enough of this kind.

You must write soon and often. I will let you know whence to direct your letters when I move. For the present, you must direct your letters to this place in care of Dr. Waldridge at Franklin, Tenn. I now must close. Give my best love to all. May God guard and protect you all my Dear Sisters. From ____ is the Prayers of you affectionate and kind brother.

Goah W. Stewart
Capt. Co. K, 1st Mo. Infantry C.S.A.

P.S. I am wounded in both thighs, the ball passing thence [through?] and missed the bones.
