For Jim McGhee - Von Phul's Battery

Sir,

In your book on Missouri Confederate Units, it is stated that this battery was formed from men drawn from Daniel Frost’s Brigade in February 1863.

A letter from Von Phul in his CSR records (just posted by Bryan Howerton on the Arkansas Board) states that in January 1863 he was appointed by Hindman as 1st Lieutenant in a battery under Capt. Gorham.

James C. Gorham had previously commanded what was to become the 3rd Missouri Battery before being replaced by Charles B. Tilden in November 1862. His CSR records state that he signed requisitions at Little Rock in January 1863 as “Captain commanding battery”, and that this unit has not been identified.

Von Phul goes on to state that after fifteen days Gorham resigned and Von Phul assumed command of the battery.

Do you think it likely that this unidentified unit of Gorham’s is one and the same as Von Phul’s Battery?
