The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Parsons Division surrenders 150 years ago toda

Thanks for the reminder. My GGG-grandfather, Green Berry Harris was part of that force. Because of the federal proclamation in the summer of 1862 of local eligible men to enlist in the local militias for federal service, many men were forced into a decision of choosing a side, a choice many wished not to have to face. Green Berry and his brother? George enlisted August 5, 1862 at Thomasville (Eleven Points) in Oregon County, Missouri for a three year period or the length of the war. The Harris boys joined the 8th Missouri Infantry (Confederate) Company D, Colonel Charles S. Mitchell’s Regiment. They were placed in twenty-eight year old Captain Eathan Allen Pinnell’s Company (Pinnell's diary was published in 1999 and titled, Serving with Honor, edited by Michael E. Banasik and published by Camp Pope Bookshop. Green Berry and George are mentioned in the diary four different times). on August 7, 1862. Many southern Phelps County residents joined the same company. Green Berry and most those other Phelps County ex-confederates would be arriving at home roughly around 150 years as of this date.
