John Hutchison was NOT the last Missouri Civil War veteran. The last veteran was Israel Broadsword who died in Spokane, Washington, in July 1952. He served in the 51st Missouri. Hutchison has long been proclaimed to have been the last Missouri veteran with the claim going back into the 1940s when Life Magazine published an article on the last Civil War vets in the U.S. Broadsword also served in the 19th Kansas Cavalry which is the unit that appears on his veterans marker.
