Re: Epaminondas M. Smith & Robert Collins

Capt EM Smith enlisted Jan 26, 1862 for 3 years at Springfield MO into Capt Robert Collins Company. This company was Gen'l Price's escort since formation and was also listed variously as Capt Smith's Company Missouri Cav., Capt Smith's Co., Capt Collin's Company, (Old) Company H, (New) Company I, (3d) Company K, 2nd Regiment Missouri Cav.

The 4th (also called the 1st) Battalion Missouri Cavalry was organized in compliance with S.O 66, Headquarters Army of the West, dated Memphis April 26, 1862; and by S.O. 5, same headquarters, dated Priceville, July 2, 1862, the battalion was increased to a Regiment and designated 2nd Missouri Cavalry.

Capt Smith resigned his post with Maj Gen'l Price's Guard ("Windsor Guards") at Ripley Mississippi in October 1862 due to physical ailment (cough and chronic dysentary). He was given a provisional discharge October 1862. He is replaced by Capt. Collins.

After that he seems to disappear. I've found no census records on him at all.
