If I remember, these "Markers" could hold anything for the line to dress on from a stick with a rag tied on it, to a musket held upside down. I'm sure there were many other things held up so the soldier could see down the line to keep his dress. A foot officer would use his sword, but I don't think he was considered a "marker".
