Here is some information that might help you.

Theodore Duncan
• 1827 – 27 Jun 1861
• Fairview Cemetery – Liberty, Missouri
• Captain, Smithville Home Guard (Home Guard)
• Captain, Hughes’ Regiment, Missouri State Guard (Confederate)

Theodore Duncan was the son of Captain William Duncan of Kentucky. Theodore married Henrietta P. Johnson on May 19, 1853, in Platte County. Their children were Mary E., Benjamin S., James William Theodore, and Calhoun Yancy. Mr. Duncan fought in the Mexican War with Colonel Doniphan. Early in the Civil War, on June 16, 1861, while camped with the Missouri State Guard near Blue Mills in Jackson County, Mr. Duncan was shot by a fellow soldier who many thought was insane. The assailant was found and killed the next day. Duncan died from his wounds on June 27, 1861. He was the first fatality of the war from Clay County. He is buried at the Confederate Monument in Liberty’s Fairview Cemetery.

Also, the 1885 History of Clay County, which can be accessed using the link provided, has some additional info. He is mentioned on pgs 201 and 203-204
