Neil,

I believe the two dead soldiers you speak of were part of the Huntsville Militia under the command of Capt. Fin Denny. As a result of that skirmish there were actually three dead; the two militiamen and one of Anderson's, a young man, with the last name of 'Crewes' from Centralia.

Unfortunately, the names of the two militiamen have been lost over the years, however, Anderson buried Crewes somewhere on the old Shaefer place (just up the hill from where you placed the marker). There was no headstone, only rock at the head and foot of the grave; Tom Hager who lived on the farm in latter years might of possibly moved the body, but this is just speculation. At one time Crewes brother came looking for the body in effort to move it to the old family cemetery, however, I don't know if it was ever found.

Following this further, two of Captain Denny's men, Theo Yowell, and Henry Reed hid under the Sweet Spring bridge on their retreat back to Huntsville. While in hiding several of Anderson's men rode back across the bridge; some even rode down the bank into the creek to water their horses, all the while, the two militiamen went undetected.

IIRC, Anderson and his gang killed about 50 of the Militias horses after the skirmish. Incidentally, I'm not sure if it was this skirmish or the one a few days prior in Huntsville, where Anderson rode out of town and pistol whipped Joel Smith of 'Smithland' fame (near Higbee off the Fayette/Huntsville road) and stole a few horses.

Regards,
Tony
