More on the "Sam Young." In "The Army's Navy Series" Dictionary of Transport and Combatant Vessels, Steam and Sail, Employed by the Union Army, 1861-1868, Compiled by Charles Dana Gibson and E. Kay Gibson (Camden, ME. Ensign Press. 1995), the "Sam Young" is referred to the "Samuel B. Young." The entry notes: "Chartered Jan. 21 - Apr. 4, 1863; Sept. 26, 1863 - Jan. 23, 1864; Feb. 2 - Mar. 17, 1864. Hired Jan. 21 - Feb. 6, 1865; June 16, 1865 for unknown period. Margin note states vessel sank July 22, 1865; no further details."
It is listed as a sternwheel steamer, 166 tons.
This volume has an excellent introduction on tonnages, and much more on information and sources.
