Not many people realize that one of the attempts by Grant to bypass Vicksburg was successful. The Lake Providence route was actually successfully opened, but not enough Ohio-river class steamboats had been provided by the war department to take advantage of the route. Recently I found out that the name of the first steamer to successfully pass from the Mississippi River into Bayou Macon was the "Sam Young." I have heard that all the steamboat fanatics hang out in the Missouri group, do you guys have any pictures of / information about this boat?
From various websites, I gathered it was a 155 ton sternwheeler ... any idea how many feet of draft it drew?
