Re: Wm. M. Morgan 60th E.M.M. Co A

Homer and GTC,

I did notice in the 1860 census of Bevo Township including Calhoun in northeast Henry County the household of 48-year-old, Virginia-born teamster Jonathan Morgan including 23-year-old Rebecca born in VA, 11-year-old Eliza born in VA, and one-year-old Alexander born in Missouri. Could these be kin to your William Meredith Morgan?

I found no William Meredith Morgan or any such name with an age of about 21 in the Glasgow area of Howard of neighboring Chariton Counties.

Not being in the 1860 census is not unusual for young men on the go in those days, so it doesn't bother me, except it makes them harder to research.

I'm going in the same direction as Homer. How sure are you that this record for Wm. M. Morgan in the 60th EMM, "Batt. A" is your man?

Company A, 60th EMM was primarily a Benton County outfit (which is probably what helped bring Homer in on this), but since Calhoun is just a few miles from the Benton County line I can see how Calhoun men could be included. The 60th EMM was one of those "split" EMM regiments with companies spread all over southwest MO and even some men in Clark County in far distant northeast corner of MO. I see that this William M. Morgan did 205 days of active duty between late October 1862 and late May 1863 in the Henry County seat of Clinton, probably helping to guard his company's armory probably kept in the courthouse, among other duties.
