Re: Divided Missouri
In Response To: Divided Missouri ()

hi to interested civil war buffs. i lived in st joe ,missouri for 4 years back in 1986- 1990. it is a great historic town with some good historic sights. st joe,mo. was deeply divided during the war but mainly a
union held town. the patee house museum (if it is still in operation) reveals a history of st joe.
locals told me that jesse james lived on what is now lafayette street in st joe. lafayette street is connected to the main thoroughfare that runs through st joe. (known as the belt). although the house where jesse james was shot has been moved, it is available for viewing. although it has been over 20 years since i have lived in st joe, there is a house located in leavenworth county, kansas (just across the river from buchanan county ,missouri (st joe) where locals told me (assuming they have documented information) that president abe lincoln had stayed as a guest for one night. it was called the
''8 mile house'' just up from leavenworth kansas about 8 miles. can not confirm this, but many locals who had been in that area, seemed to know this with some truth. during the war, nearly every county in missouri (maybe the exception of st louis county) was hostile. also those who may be interested to know. the brother of general george custer is buried at fort leavenworth national cemetery. i
can not recall the name, but i think his name was tom custer. i could be mistaken since he may have had more than 1 brother. thanks for allowing me to write this historical info.
