John.
Thank you for your response and ideas. I do believe that the William S Clay that died at Rock Island is from St Francois Co. I don’t know how the family was informed of the death but it was convincing enough that they claimed the body and provided a burial.

Here are a couple of receipts included in estate settlement Samuel C McHenry (brother of Mary E McHenry) Administrator.
1.0 Estate Of William S Clay To Nesbit Ortin (widows grandfather?) cash advance $112.92 .
The above account is for furnishing the means of procuring a Metallic Coffin & other expenses incurred in bringing the body of Wm S Clay from Rock Island to his former Home. Nov. 4 1865.

2.0 Receipt to Mr S. B. Herod Dated March1 1867 for having a set of Grave Stones shipped and stored by the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad Co. from St Louis to (Irondale MO?). Later, 1 Aug to 6th 1867 for Hauling and setting Grave Stones.

Wm S Clay was buried in The McHenry Cemetery off Doss Rd in St. Francois, Co.
The gravestones are now missing, but I have some hand written notes referencing the Wm S Clay gravestone to locate another burial.

Thanks again. Keep teasing this out. Let me know if you have questions.
