The Missouri Confederate Cav. Soldier's Experience

I am the descendant of a Missouri Confederate Cavalry Soldier who enlisted August of 1864 in Shelby's Division, Jackman's Brigade, William's Regiment, Company C. He was just 20 years old at the time. He was at the Battle of Westport and retreated with his company to Arkansas where he split off with a few of his compatriots and rode to Shreveport to surrender. I am writing a bio on him for my family. My question is: What was the experience of the Confederate Cavalry soldier during this time? When he enlisted did he get to go home and pack and say goodbye to his family or was he unable to do that once he signed on? Did he get a whole uniform, half a uniform or any uniform? If he wore a uniform what was it made of and what did it look like? Did he have to bring his own firearm or was he issued a firearm, if so what was it? Did he have to provide his own mount or was one issued to him? Did they have to supply their own rations? Was there anything unusual about the Missouri Confederate Cavalry Soldier's experience as compared to any other? Any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and indulgence.
