Ryan,

I am kinda mystified by this one myself. Nobody ever asked my about the 22nd EMM before.

There were lots of St. Louis City and St. Louis County men enrolled during late summer and autumn 1862 into the Enrolled Missouri Militia--about 22 or 23 regiments of them, numbered 1 through 23 or so. Therefore, I would assume that "Company B22" translates into Company B of the 22nd EMM. The problem with that is that I found a roster of officers of that regiment in the report of the Missouri Adjutant General's annual report for 1865, but cannot find ANY of them listed in the online Missouri Secretary of State's Office, Missouri State Archives, military service records, http://sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers.

Further, I looked through all the Missouri Civil War records for men named "Fortune" and found no Mark nor anyone in the 22nd EMM.

Does Mark Fortune have another name, such as a middle name, under which he could be listed?

Also, I noticed that the officer roster of the 22nd EMM I found has absolutely no remarks after all the officers were installed in October 1862. (Is the date you have for Mark Fortune's enrollment in October 1862?) An officer roster with absolutely no remarks is not normal. I am wondering if the 22nd was cranked up, soldiers enrolled, officers appointed, and then disbanded. Like I said above, the St. Louis area had plenty of other EMM regiments to guard the place--which is mostly what those local EMM outfits did there.

I also checked Dyer's "A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion" for a thumbnail history of the 22nd EMM, but no dice. Most of the other lower number EMM regiments at least have a mention in Dyer, but the 22nd does not along with a few others. This also makes me think the 22nd and perhaps a few other of the St. Louis area EMM outfits were conceived in a hurry, but soon after disbanded as not needed.

Sadly, this is guesswork, arrived upon by lack of information more than substance. Hmmmm.

Just to aggrevate me more, I can't find Mark Fortune in the 1860 Missouri Census of the St. Louis City and County, either. By any chance, was his occupation saddle making or something related? I see that at least two other Fortune men did that in the area.
