Re: 6th or "Southwest" MO Cav. CSA
Gosh thanks everyone for the help.
W.D. SPAIN was my ancestor and I am trying to puzzle out what campaigns he and his brothers might have been on. Joe Shelby was originally listed as part of that outfit.
W.D. was the only one married and looking at the enlistment dates it seems he and brother Henderson were the last to join up. Rich was the first. He must have been somewhat more gung-ho. He is the only one to not survive the war. Neil Block has him dying of disease place unknown.
A 1917 biography in "History of Dade County and her People" of brother Robert SPAIN mentions that Richard was killed in Arkansas.
And he is listed as killed in a summary of the dead Confederates from Dade Co. I am trying to hazard a guess just where he died.
This 1917 book has a few pages on the unit with names and some casualties. It was written by Lewis RENFRO. Five RENFRO brothers from Dade Co also in that unit. Glad to snail-mail a copy to anyone.
Thanks again. I just found this site this week-end and everyone has been extremely kind.
