A.W. Slayback's Cav; Lt W.J. Guthrie

re: 2d Lt. William Jackson Guthrie of Company A of Colonel Alonzo W. Slayback's MO Cavalry
.
I am trying to prove, or disprove, that Lt. W.F. Guthrie was in Texas during the Oct 13, 1864 Battle of Elm Creek, Young County, Texas. ..My web page, cited below, defines my question more clearly.
.

.
Question: W.F. Guthrie? ..Did McConnell mean W.J. Guthrie or W.F. Guthrie?
.
Given 1): "W.F. Guthrie" is mentioned in the highly acclaimed book by J.C. McConnell cited below between the stars.
.
Given 2): Most men of Bourland's Regiment, Company D, lived in the Whitesboro, Texas area near the Grayson-Cooke County, Texas line although Lt. Nathaniel Franklin Carson, of Company D, was from Brazos Co TX (250 miles distant). ..Lt. Carson commanded the 15 or 16 men who were patrolling the Elm Creek area when Comanches and Kiowas attacked on Oct 13, 1864 killing five of his soldiers. Notice that this W.J. Guthrie lived in Whitesboro in both the 1860 and 1870 Grayson Co TX census.
.
The following quote is from Joseph Carroll McConnell's 1939 book: "The West Texas Frontier or a Descriptive History of Early Times in Western Texas," Volumes I (1933) and II (1939), that appears on the web page cited below.

Also interviewed Walter F. Robinson, mentioned above. Walter Robinson was at Ft. Belknap when this raid was made and about nine years old at the time. Interviewed A.C. (Chess) Tackett mentioned above, W. F. Guthrie, who was one of the 15 or 16 men with Lt. Carson when surrounded by Indians, as mentioned above; F. M. (Babe) Williams; Jno. Marlin, and many others who lived in young Young and adjoining counties at the time.

.
W.J. Guthrie was active from 1871 until 1875 in the Whitesboro Masonic Lodge.
.
William Jackson Guthrie's parentage and siblings.
.
William Jackson Guthrie, son of Samuel R. Guthrie and Margaret Mathers. Samuel R. Guthrie was born in 1798 in North Carolina and d. 1849/1850 in Smith Co., TX. Samuel married Margaret Mathers on 31 Oct 1821, Jefferson Co., GA. -She was born in 1803 Georgia.
.
Samuel R. Guthrie died in Smith Co., TX from an inflated bladder. The 1850 Mortality Schedules list his occupation as a "Hatter".
.
The children listed for Samuel & Margaret are:
.
1.William Jackson Guthrie, b. 1825 AL and d. in Jack Co., TX? He m. Emily Draper.
.
2. Isaac Newton Guthrie, b. 1829 AL and d. 1866 AR on a cattle drive. He m(1). Nancy J. Hill (19 Jan 1856 Smith Co., TX) and m(2). Helen Mar Hill, dau of James Calhoun Hill, on 21 Jan 1866 in Smith Co., TX.
.
3. Lydia J. Guthrie, b. 1830 AL
.
4. James I. Guthrie, b. 1833 AL. He m. Elizabeth.
.
The 1849 tax list of Smith Co., TX mentions a Samuel Guthrie with 1 horse.
.
In the 1860 census of Smith Co., TX in Tyler, for the household William & Emily (listed at W.J. Guthrie), we find: 1112/1115 W.J. Guthrie, 26. male, Farmer, $500/$300, Alabama; Emily, 26 fe, Arkansas; Everett Calvin, 7 male, Texas ..(evidently was in two 1860 Texas censuses)
.
Info from Wm. Jackson Guthrie's blood kin. ..... Now my opinion is that Everett Calvin should be Everett Calhoun. My belief is that Mary Calhoun, daughter of Elzie Calhoun had Everett illigitimately, something not very common for that time. My reasons for this is that William Guthrie and Emily Draper were married in Smith Co., TX on 2 Nov 1853 and according to this record the census was taken on 1 Sep 1853. Unless Emily was already pregnant when she married, it is highly unlikely that they would have had any children in 1853 and certainly not a 7 year old son by 1860. So, Mary Calhoun, who gave birth to a child, Everett, allowed William & Emily to take him into their home. They seemed well-to-do and could care for him well. No other records seem to indicate that William and Emily ever had any other children or at least I have not found any. You had asked me this question and I could not find any other children listed. ... This is the only census record where Everett appears and his relationship with the census alone is unclear. However, my opinion is that he is Elzie Calhoun Guthrie who later appears in Cooke Co., TX records.
.
W.J. Guthrie and wife Emily moved to Young Co TX by 1880. That is where I have William Guthrie listed as a Dry Goods Merchant. In 2002, I received some information from dorholub@wf.net (President of the Young Co TX Historical Society) stating that William J. Guthrie was a dry goods merchant in the town of Belknap and "rented" a store front. There was no "sign" on the building that designated his store from early pictures of the town. Belknap was in Precinct 4 in 1880 in Young Co., TX and was about 1/2 miles from Fort Belknap. This is all I have on the store. Apparently, there are pictures of the town, should you desire to check that out.
