G. B Hite info appears on the up and up and corresponds to evry thing I've found so far. Its from http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=stafa&id=I81823

I find the information about a libel lawsuit against the Louisville Courier intersting as that suit may have first hand testimony regarding the HITE/JAMES relationship, particularly the boys... sounds like a great source to dig into.

Note: He was a farmer. Also, he was in the mercantile business in Adairville, Logan, KY and at one time was one of the wealthiest men in the county. In 1878 he lost heavily speculating in tobacco and was forced to make an assignment. His creditors were not hurt, however, as he paid dollar for dollar and had a good home left. He was a man of remarkable energy and of remarkable health, and was never confined to his bed with sickness during his life, until the very end of his earthly stay.

Note: His obituary was published in "The Russellville Ledger Town Crier" in the Wednesday, 2 Dec 1891 edition. He died at the residence of his son, George T Hite last Tuesday. The funeral services were conducted by Reverend I W Emerson.

About 1852, they built their home in Logan County, KY on land settled by George's grandfather, Lieutenant Joseph Hite, Jr. In October 1989, the home was still standing, when visited by Mary H Christian, a great great granddaughter of George and Nancy.
