Forgive me for butting in but could it be possible the seven men were on their way to the surrender at Wittsburg.

Date of death given was May 28th 1865.
Surrender at Wittsburg was May 29th 1865.
Surrender at Jacksonport was June 5th 1865.

Also Adruain mentioned they surrendered their weapons when captured. They would have had to give up the weapons when paroled.
