Florian Octave Cornay (son of Numa Cornay and Azelie Hymel) was born 1832 in Franklin, LA, and died 1864 in New Orleans. St Louis Cemetary #2. He married Adele Haydel on July 02, 1852, daughter of Marcian Belfort Haydel and Marguerite Adele Haydel.

Capt. Florian Cornay was company commander of F company, 4th Louisiana Infantry, 1st Field Battalion. He wrote many letters to his wife while in the army (Civil War) and received many commendations for his military career.

These letters, written in French and later translated, have been given, with their translations, to the Tulane Special Collections Department. I have been told that Capt Cornay,s sword, scabbard and ribbons were donated by his daughter, Gracinta Cornay, (my grandfather's sister), to the Cabildo Museum in Jackson Square. However, later these items disappeared from the Cabildo collection- there seems to be no trace of what became of them.

Cornay, a member of the Corps of cadets of the Western Military Institute of Kentucky, became surveyor of St. Mary Parish. During the Civil War Cornay served the Confederate cause as Captain of the 1st Field Battery, Louisiana Artillery. Collection includes appointments, degree, certificates, some correspondence and roll of St. Mary Cannoneers. Among the correspondents is General Richard Taylor. Cornay was killed Apr 26, 1864. 40 items.
