I've recently completed a study of foreign-born soldiers in the armies of Gettysburg. In the Federal army, I am aware of two Chinese and an Australian who served. In the Army of Northern Virginia, Frank Price, an Adjutant in Robertson's Texas brigade, was born in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the son of a British army veteran. Then there is Private George D. Lustin of Company D, 15th Louisiana, who was born either in the East Indies or East India. The former was known as the Dutch East Indies (in the Caribbean), while East India (in south Asia), was controlled by the British. I identified Lustin through a labor intensive review of Booth's records. In addition, Thomas Walter Brooks' book, Lee's Foreign Legion, about the 10th Louisiana Infantry, identifies birthplaces of this regiment's soldiers, however none hailed from Asia.
