Doing research over the past few weeks have turned up some interesting results in my opinion of former Louisiana Confederates who joined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry (Union) as a result of being prisoners of War at Gettysburg. The following is the breakdowns and are based on a 76% completion rate.

Nicholls' Brigade = 23

10TH LOUISIANA = 11
14TH LOUISIANA = 5
2ND LOUISIANA = 3
15TH LOUISIANA = 3
1ST LOUISIANA = 1 (NELLIGAN'S)

HAYS' BRIGADE = 20

5TH LOUISIANA = 6
8TH LOUISIANA = 5
7TH LOUISIANA = 4
9TH LOUISIANA = 3
6TH LOUISIANA = 2

LOUISIANA ARTILLERY = 3

WASHINGTON ARTILLERY = 1
CAPTAIN GREEN'S ARTILLERY = 1
MADISION LIGHT ARTILLERY = 1

Since the 10th Louisiana Infantry led in this catagory I further broke down their places of birth and found these facts:

10th Louisiana = 11

Virginia = 1
Louisiana = 1

New York = 1

Ireland = 3
Austria = 1
Canada = 1
Russia = 1
Sardinia = 1
Switzerland = 1

Only 1 galvanized Yankee Louisianan out of the 11 soldiers from the 10th Louisiana Infantry who joined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry was a native of Louisiana and he had a most impressive War record prior to Gettysburg. He had never missed a battle with the 10th Louisiana and had been wounded twice prior to the battle of Gettsyburg. I have not broken down the other Louisiana Regiments insofar as places of birth but imagine it will be more than 50% of non-native Louisianans. It would appear that patriotism had a lot to do with not joining the Federal Army while in Northern prisons. In the same respect it would appear that some people not born in Louisiana were not as willingly to make the sacrifice. This is not to suggest that some people of foreign birth did not contribute to the Confederate cause. However, the next time you hear of galvanized Yankees ask yourself, "I wonder where they were born?"
