The Kentucky in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Big Sandy Civil War Round Table

Greg:
Good to hear from you.
We are located in extreme eastern Kentucky along the West Virginia borer. Our two most famous campaigns of the Civil War were: 1. the October/November 1861 move from Maysville, KY to Hazel Green, West Liberty, Salyersville, Prestonsburg and Pikeville by Gen. William "Bull" Nelson's brigade which culminated with the Battle of Ivy Mountain on November 8 and the battle of Piketon the following day; 2. the late December 1861 through March 1862 contest between Humphrey Marshall, CSA and James A. Garfield, US, which saw the Battle of Middle Creek in January and the Battle of Pound Gap in March. Garfield received his big. gen'l commission in our town of Pikeivlle, KY in March '62. This started a long climb to the White House on his part. Following these two campaigns, the valley saw some of the more colorful, and vicious, partisan action of the entire war.
Our meetings are held in the county seats along the river- Catlettsburg, Louisa, Paintsville, Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Whitesburg- since this is an area Round Table organization, not just one town.
The best of success to your organization.
Randall Osborne
