Just finished writing on Capt Jacob C Bennett, who served with the 8th KY and then with Johnson's 10th Partisan Rangers. He was on Morgan's Long Raid, was captured and one of the six officers who escaped from the Ohio prison with Morgan. He made his way to Overton Co.(now Clay), TN and set up an independent command of guerillas and raided across state lines into KY. I found several accounts in newspapers about his raids on Owensboro and Lewisport. The most interesting aspect was that the reports say that negroes rode with him on these raids. Overton now Clay county was a hotbed of guerilla activity. There were several guerilla commands constantly raiding Monroe, Cumberland, Clinton counties, KY then withdrawing back to the Cumberland Plateau. The most notorious, of course, was Champ Ferguson, O. P. Hamilton and Tinker Dave Beaty. Capt Bennett, after the war, became Clay Co., TN's second sheriff and is buried in Clay.
I would be glad to send you a copy of my story. I am compiling a history of partisan fighters from this area.
Sincerely
Sandy
