Your numbers for desertions from Drew's Regt at Locust Grove is probably about right. They were added to the 2nd Indian Home Guard which was under-strength due to the Osage going on a buffalo hunt (and the officers were glad to be rid of them). The Osage were stricken from the rolls and the Cherokee added.

Those of Drew's Regt that were not 'captured' encamped around Chief John Ross' house at Park Hill. Col. Drew was at Ft Davis with about a company of his regiment -- the only 'Southern men' of his command. Those at Park Hill were there to protect Ross from Watie's men who they believed intended to murder Ross. Undoubtedly Watie's men would have, given the opportunity. Ross may have been communicating with Northern authorities prior to and during the 1st Indian Expedition, Watie's men certainly believed that was true.

After Capt Greeno met with Ross at Park Hill, many more of Drew's Regt plus many Pins who were not in the Confederate service began to join the IHG, enough to form the 3rd IHG, the "Pin regiment". Greeno 'arrested' Ross and paroled him, leaving him at his home for 3 weeks with a very small body guard of Pins. Greeno took the rest back to the main Union camp to be organized.

Ross probably didn't get much sleep during those three weeks. Drew's Regt and civilian Pins had practically been his personal bodyguard but now he only had a few to protect him from retaliation from Watie's men. Luckily for Ross, the presence of Weer's force kept the Confederates from sending a sizeable force to Park Hill. The first week of August, Col. Cloud marched to Park Hill, with a sizeable portion of then Major Wm A Phillip's new command, and escorted Ross, his family, some friends, and the Cherokee Treasury to the north. The day they were leaving, a Confederate scout from Ft Davis skirmished with Pins at Murrell's plantation, just a couple of miles west of Ross' house, and learned of Ross' exodus.

In just over a month, perhaps 1,500 Cherokee joined the Indian Home Guard. Drew's Regt, having only 70-80 men left, ceased to exist.
