When Vaughn's brigade was dispatched to the Shenandoah Valley the end of May, they traveled without their mounts which were left in Bristol, Tenn./Va.
"On reaching Bristol we were dismounted, placed upon freight cars, and hurried to Lynchburg and then to Staunton. Here we learned that we were sent to meet General Hunter, who was coming up the valley to raid Lexington, Staunton, and Lynchburg."
"For the next month and a half, Vaughn's Brigade fought at infantry."
I believe Col. Bradford, 39th Tennessee, was left in command of the remainder of the brigade left in East Tennessee.
July 17-19 their horses arrived from Southwestern Tennessee, Vaughn at the time in the Winchester, Va. area.
