Answers to locations in mid-1864 will be found in service files of individual officers, who signed and dated receipts for those under their direct command. For instance, in Major Clarke's file we find the following receipts for --
1) June 4, 1864, Atlanta GA: “I am under orders...to mount the dismounted men of the 16th Ga. Battn. Cav.”
2) 120 horses, Athens GA July 20, 1864: “Detached for temporary duty in Georgia”.
3) Detachment of 130 horses at Athens GA, Aug. 15, 1864, plus 112 grain sacks.
In Lieut. Samuel P. Kinney's file --
1) June 1864, requisition for 183 horses: “The 16th Ga. Battn. Cav. has been temporarily dismounted and the horses with detail to attend them left in charge of Lt. S. P. Kinney, Co. “H”.
