Re: listing of GA Confederates at the 75th reunion

Dennis,

I don't believe John Thomas Hunter (1848-1939) of Troup County and John T. Hunter of the 7th GA INF
are the same guy.

John T. Hunter of the 7th GA went AWOL/deserted June 23, 1863 per his CSR; and Union POW records
indicate he as captured @ Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. He was held in Union captivity til taking the oath
in 1865, which makes me wonder if he was actually a deserter. Many deserters took the oath shortly
after capture, and stayed in the north until the war was over, instead of spending time in incarceration.
He could be an exception. He could have been a deserter but simply processed with the captives from
Gettysburg (July 1-5, 1863). He could have been absent when muster was taken during the march
into Pennsylvania, and fell back in afterwards, being present and subjected to capture. We'll probably
never know for certain.

I checked the GA pension application for John Thomas Hunter of Troup Co. GA who attended the 1938
Gettyburg Reunion, His pension was approved, and he indicates on one form he was in the GA Militia,
and on another the 37th GA INF. I see no evidence of a Hunter with the 37th GA. Since he was an
approved pensioner, I'm confident this man did not desert.
