An intersting CMSR

I've not quite read a Confederate CMSR's like this before although several probably exist.

According to the Federal POW Records William E. Mull was reported taken prisoner during the Atlanta Campaign and was said to be with the 39th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops. He said he was from Haywood County, North Carolina. However after his capture he seems to have changed his mind either that or the Union authorities made a mistake. Now it was William E. Mulls of the 39th Regiment, Georgia Infantry.

Both units were at the Atlanta Campaign. However the surname of Mull was fairly widespread while the surname of Mulls not so much. According to the United States Census of 1860 a William E. Mull was living in Haywood County, North Carolina and born about 1846.

It is my opinion that he was with the 39th North Carolina although his CMSR's are listed in the 39th Georgia under William E. Mulls. His CMSR's for the 39th Georgia start off with him in the 39th North Carolina. When you look at his CMSR's for the 39th North Carolina it refers him to the 39th Georgia.

Today his tombstone at Camp Chase is correct in my opinion and he is buried as William E. Mull of the 39th North Carolina.
