Dennis, It appears they got the most important thing right, his marker on his final resting place. People would not realize how many markers are incorrect on Confederate Graves, maybe this is a reason for that. Someone put in the wrong information to start with, then someone else came along and either added or left out a letter or number so now we have a totally different person.
If this happened more than once, just imagine how this messed up all the records.
We have found several graves in just one Ga. county, that are marked with the correct V.A. Confederate headstone, that there is no record of them actually serving. I would think 90% of these came pre-WW2. Before there were computers, and the means of travel we now have, so it is understandable how this happened. This is one reason I spent so much time trying to identify when markers were made and set. But the V.A. must have gotten tired of me and my questions, so they just quit answering me.
BUT I had rather see a Confederate marker on a grave that no records match him to service in the Confederate service than to find one that has the correct records buried some where without a marker at all. Just because there was no record does not mean that man did not serve. This is a never ending project that may never be solved, but there are a lot of people working day after day trying to identify these problems and solve them. Thank you for the work you do, and have done for years, finding these and either solving them or bringing them to the attention of others that will take the ball and carry it.
